Houston White of… well, I guess Houston White.

Houston White walked into the Comedy Corner Underground and was immediately amazed. He was genuinely charmed by the rawness of a space so clearly carved out of what would have been an unused and unloved basement. It was reminiscent of spaces he loves from NYC. That was before we even began the show.

From there we got to know Houston in the way we do- we talked. We opened up the conversation to learn more about some of the experiences that have led Houston to where he is today. In case you don’t know, Houston White is the man behind the brand by the same name. I am so glad that we have stayed committed to not researching our guests, as there is a lot of information out there in the world about Houston.

We talk about the family drywall business, the maturity that has helped Houston understand that it is okay that he is the brand. We discuss safeness as an alternative to safety- which was the first time I had heard the two things talked about in that way. And we spend some time working through the importance of positivity, and the role we play in shaping a future that is full of safeness and safe places for all of our children, as they are the real reason for our endeavors, or at least they should be.

Oh, and we get a very thoughtful and surprisingly fact-filled (for our show anyway) rundown of why barbershops have historically been a central hub for community, wealth and activism within the black communities of America.
